Breaking Busy Book Review

Why Am I “Breaking Busy”? {A Book Review}

Anyone who knows me, knows the word “busy” is banned in my presence.  Its a four-letter word that starts as an excuse and ends in an eye-roll.  Everyone is busy.  Sorry, we all are.  You are no more busy than I am, so please don’t make it sound like you are.  Its the choices we make to fill the space in our 24-hour lives that make the difference.  I choose not to say “I’m too busy to help you,” or “sorry I can’t do that for you, because I’m too busy.”  Because frankly, if you really mattered to me, which you do, I absolutely would.

I recently read an amazing book that put all of this “busyness” into complete perspective.  It examined why we are doing what we’re doing, what we’ve said yes to and why, and whether those are things we actually want to be spending our time and resources on.

If you are tired of being “all things, to all people,” read on to see what I thought of Alli Worthington’s book, Breaking Busy, How To Find Peace & Purpose In A World of Crazy.

Have you ever had a friend that tells it like it is.  Not in a pushy, you should do it my way, but in a way that really makes you reevaluate everything you’ve ever done?  That’s Alli.  She’s the big sister I never had.  She’s lived my life – she was a hard working mom (ok – she had five kids, I’ve only got one), who had a CRAZY BUSY schedule, and over-committed.  She was exhausted.  She wanted more.  She wanted to BE more.  She was never enough.

This was me.

I am incredibly ambitious.  I want nothing more than to be the best me I can ever be.  I am never good enough, but I’m OK with this.

But this book would not be titled, “Breaking Busy,” if it were more like “GirlBoss.

Breaking Busy Book. Alli Worthington. If it doesn't add to your life, it doesn't belong in your life

Alli’s book is a really easy read, like talking with your girlfriend, who provides step-by-step advice on how to change your thinking, interspersed with funny stories from her own life.  And just when you realize how many things you need to change, she holds your hand and says, its OK, baby steps.  I may or may not have started crying a few times, when I realized that while I hate the word “busy,” I needed to realize I was still acting “busy.”

Note to readers – read this in bed, in the comfort of hot chocolate, a warm blanket and a snuggly puppy.  You might need it.  NOT – whatever you do – NOT in front of business travelers in one of the nation’s busiest airports. Or at least buy a HUGE pack of tissues at the concessions stand before takeoff.  Ha!

Alli challenged me to think about why I am busy.  That what I fill up my time should be filled with things I enjoy, so that I am not being pulled in too many directions.  Its about saying NO to things I don’t enjoy.  Its about centering my energy and finding my calm.

What does Alli have to say about it? (aka The Book Press Release Lingo)

Have you ever secretly felt like a fraud or failure as you struggle to find balance in life? Do you find yourself juggling everything in mediocrity and feeling like you’re succeeding at very little? Do you ever feel like life is just one cycle of crazy busy after another? Then Breaking Busy is exactly what you need!

In Breaking Busy, Alli Worthington tackles the big questions about finding happiness and one’s God-given purpose in a fun, no-nonsense way.

Sharing how society’s message of be more, do more, achieve more is keeping us from hearing God’s message to us, that doesn’t say ‘more’, but simply says ‘enough’. You are enough.

Breaking Busy marries research with biblical principles, instilling confidence that you, too, can move from crazy busy to confident calm. Full of refreshing color and uproarious true stories, you’ll unpack truths that dismantle common happiness myths.

You’ll learn real-life guidance on boundaries, relationships, and self-care, as Alli examines her own mistakes and walks through how she learned from her missteps and found peace in a world of busyness.

You’ll be empowered to get unstuck, to let go of the good to make way for the great, to know yourself and your Creator, and ultimately to find peace and purpose in this world of crazy.

Breaking Busy will help you:

  • Understand that whatever your age or season of life, new adventures are waiting for you. Walking in your God-given destiny is the best kind of life you can live.
  • Learn how to stop chasing what leaves you empty and start doing what you were created to do.
  • Identify the common lies you believe and how to strip their power from your life.
  • Recognize that your passions and talents can give you clues into your purpose in life.
  • Discover how to overcome feeling a constant pressure to be all things to all people.

If you have ever felt like there is something missing from life and you just can’t figure out what it is, even though it feels like you are busier and busier all the time, this book is for you.

You have to start breaking busy before the busy breaks you.

How are the results so far?

Well, I can say that I’ve pulled back some of my commitments.  I’ve stopped over scheduling my weekends and instead, schedule a few fun “outings” with my daughter to keep us going, but I also schedule in self-care items for myself, like hair, nails or even a makeup consultation (I did that this past weekend – super fun!)

What I love about Alli is she is absolutely out there to help others.  She has developed a FREE 5-day BREAKING BUSY video mini course with Alli Worthington + get the BONUS free Breaking Busy Guide.  This is a great opportunity to check out her process on Breaking Busy.  Register here.
